How keyless car rental works
Follow the complete journey from an approved reservation to smartphone vehicle access and a controlled return.

What is keyless car rental?
Keyless car rental lets an approved renter access a supported vehicle through secure digital permission on a smartphone, rather than collecting a physical key from a rental desk. The permission belongs to a particular rental and authorised driver. It should be issued only after the operator’s required checks are complete.
Keyless access is one step in the journey. A complete digital rental also connects the reservation, identity checks, agreement, vehicle inspection, assistance and return. Hannk provides technology for rental businesses; the operator remains responsible for supplying the rental and deciding its policies.
The rental journey, step by step
- Confirm the reservation. Match the booking to the correct operator, branch, vehicle and collection period. Explain collection requirements before travel.
- Complete driver checks. Collect the required identity and driving-licence documents. Resolve exceptions, additional-driver approval and any required International Driving Permit before granting vehicle access. Automated processing does not remove the operator’s eligibility decisions.
- Accept the rental agreement. Present the operator’s charges, insurance conditions and rental terms. Complete the configured payment or authorisation requirements. A booking confirmation alone is not approval to drive.
- Issue access permission. Associate the approved driver with the assigned vehicle and rental period. If a booking or vehicle changes, update the permission before the customer attempts collection.
- Locate and inspect the vehicle. Give clear parking instructions and the correct registration. Capture pickup condition using the configured inspection workflow and let the renter report issues.
- Unlock and begin the rental. Use the supported mobile-access method. Check that the command succeeded. Starting functions depend on the actual vehicle and installed configuration; phone unlocking does not imply universal phone starting.
- Manage changes during the rental. Follow approved processes for extensions, additional drivers, a replacement phone or a replacement vehicle. Keep access permission aligned with the rental record.
- Return, inspect and close. Confirm the permitted return location, condition evidence and operator checks. Lock the vehicle and close or revoke access under the configured rules. Locking alone does not settle outstanding rental charges.
Remote access and Bluetooth access are different
Remote vehicle control uses a connected service to communicate with the vehicle. Local Bluetooth access communicates between a nearby compatible phone and the installed equipment. Supported Hannk deployments can use local access when mobile-data coverage is weak, but the offline behaviour depends on hardware, permissions, the customer application and its configuration.
Prepare and test the access permission while connectivity is available. Do not assume identity verification, payments, new permission issuance or live support can all work offline. Test the customer journey in the actual car park with supported phones and keep a documented recovery procedure.
Who can receive a digital key?
Only drivers authorised under the operator’s rental policy should receive access. An additional driver should complete the required checks and receive their own permission through an approved sharing process. Staff accounts, administrator passwords and API keys should never be shared with renters.
If a phone is lost or stolen, the operator should verify the renter through an alternative channel, revoke the affected permission and authorise a replacement only after the recovery checks. The timing of revocation and any offline-device behaviour must be confirmed for the deployment.
What does an operator need before launch?
Confirm the vehicle makes, models, years and supported functions with Hannk. Check installation, power, coverage, permission expiry and the return process. Decide who handles access failures, late returns, eligibility exceptions and customer questions. Train staff and pilot a small group of vehicles before expanding.
An existing rental management system can remain part of the operation. An integration must keep the booking, assigned vehicle, driver status and access period consistent. Test cancellations, extensions and vehicle substitutions as well as a successful collection.
Common questions about keyless rental
Does every rental car support keyless access?
No. Vehicle compatibility and available functions depend on the make, model, year, hardware and installation. Confirm the actual fleet before promising a particular function.
Can collection happen outside desk hours?
A configured journey can support collection outside normal hours when the location is accessible, the vehicle is ready and verification, payment and support arrangements are in place. Digital access does not remove those operational requirements.
What if unlocking fails?
The renter should use the operator’s support route. Staff should check the booking, permission, vehicle and connectivity before using an authorised fallback. Never ask the customer to bypass security controls.
